An Introduction to Joyce and Yeats: Dubliners and selected poems of Yeats

This introduction to Yeats and Joyce will look at both writers in their time and consider their exploration of national identity and the cultural and political world of Ireland. While both W.B. Yeats and James Joyce bear equal claim to relevancy and influence in Irish culture, their individual perceptions of “Irishness” are often in conflict and this will be examined in a selection of Yeats' poetry and in Joyce's early work, 'Dubliners'.

Course aim

This course will introduce students to a selection of Yeats' poetry and to Joyce's 'Dubliners'. It will consider the theme of national identity within Irish culture

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Analyse and discuss a number of Yeats' poems and the short stories of Joyce
  • Discuss the different representations of Irishness found within each writer's work
  • Analyse the different conflicting positions, both political and cultural, that each writer is conveying
  • Discuss theme, language and style

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of Yeats' poems will be provided by the tutor Please bring any edition of Joyce's 'Dubliners' to each class

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
