Calligraphy is Beautiful Writing that ls within the grasp of most persons who wish to learn an absorbing & worthwhile hobby.Skills can be learnt through one to one instruction in a friendly & warm environment.The Hand to be learnt will be Italic.Basic equipment are ruler, various pencils,non-waterproof ink.The tutor can supply pens nibs.holders.Lined note paper is useful for writing & learning on.Those with personal projects (Improvers)will be free to develop this work on their own with Tutor help.Those who wish to add Illustration can do so.

Course aim

To develop Calligraphy (The Art of Beautiful Writing) as an absorbing & useful hobby,& as a creative outlet for various crafts & art forms e.g.Illustration,posters,greeting - cards.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write the Italic Hand to a reasonable standard.
  • Develop skills in layout & spacing.
  • Work in other media as well as in ink,such as water based paints.
  • Hold & use a dip pen correctly at the correct angle & posture(without slouching)
  • Design & develop personal projects in black & white,or colour with decorative or illustrative additions.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • .some .homework practice will help to refresh learning &extend it.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Ink,such as Quink or any good non-clogging non waterproof black for dipping pens into.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • There are numerous books on the market,& sometimes can be picked - up at charity shops quite cheaply. We have our own reference library of Calligraphy books for student use.
