Regional and Local History

If you are interested in the history of your local and regional area, this course is for you. Come along and enjoy learning with people who have similar interests. The discussions are informal and relaxed. If you have ever wondered about how people lived in the past, what is the history behind some of the beautiful buildings we see around us, then this is for you.

Course aim

To provide students with the knowledge about the history of their local and regional region which would hopefully give them an interest to further studies.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • State 3 facts about the history of any buildings in the local or regional area
  • State 3 facts about the lives of the people during the century in discussion
  • State 3 facts about the working lives of people during the times in question
  • Give a short talk on a historical subject or memory of own choice

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • You will be provided with notes on every topic which will be supported with a small quiz to be completed.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources
