Archaeology - Recovering the Romans: Recent Discoveries in North West England

This course will look at the some of the new archaeological material that has been uncovered in the region over the last 20 years from coins and metalwork to farmsteads and forts. Placing this in a wider British context, and looking at some Roman Empire-wide links, the course will look how the Romans conquered, occupied and worked with communities in the region, as well as exploring themes such as literacy, gender and slavery.

Course aim

An introduction to the archaeology of the Romans in North West England through recent archaeological discoveries, and looking at themes such as invasion, migration, literacy, slavery and gender.

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List three types of archaeological evidence from Roman North West England
  • Name two Roman archaeological sites from North West England
  • Carry out personal research on a topic of their own choice related to Roman North West England
  • Give a presentation to the rest of the class using the material they have researched

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
