This course will introduce clients to the Chinese art of Tai Chi. Tai Chi is a fun yet challenging activity with many proven physical and psychological benefits. Tai Chi can be practiced by anyone of any age regardless of physical ability. The course will cover: Chinese Philosophy (Taoism) in relation to Tai Chi. A brief history of Tai Chi. The benefits of regular Tai Chi practice. Meditation and mindfulness. Tai Chi Principles: Posture, breathing, movement, coordination, use of the mind (intent) Qigong (Breathing exercises): The 18 Exercises (A series of exercises that co-ordinate breath with simple movement) Tai Chi Forms: Beijing 10 step Yang Style (a series of traditional tai chi movements involving stepping through various ranges of motion) Seated Sun Style Tai Chi (especially suitable for Clients with limited mobility)

Course aim

This Course is an introduction to the philosophy and practice of the ancient Chinese art of Tai Chi with a view to improved health and well-being.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise and relate the benefits of tai chi for health and well-being.
  • Explain and demonstrate in principle and practice the fundamental concepts of the art of tai chi.
  • Practice and perform (both within the group and/or individually) a complete short Tai Chi ‘form’ and/or set of Qigong exercises (breathing exercises)
  • Recognise and measure an improvement in aspects of their physical fitness.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • A typical class will involve the demonstration and observation of Tai Chi exercises followed by group and individual practice. Clients will be encouraged to ask questions and take part in group discussion.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Clients will be able to observe their own progress as they learn new material each week. Using various fitness tests periodically through the course clients will be able to measure their own progress. Verbal feedback to clients during lessons.

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen, pencil and notebook, Loose comfortable clothes, preferably without a belt. Flat soles shoes, pumps or trainers

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Continue to study tai chi on a follow up course with the WEA or other local class. Try a different physical activity. Try another WEA course of any kind.
