Basic British Sign Language (Cheshire East ACL contract)

This basic course if designed to teach learners to communicate with Deaf people in BSL and covers a variety of topics that involve simple everyday language use. Learners will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL.

Course aim

Aimed at learning essential skills to aid communication with Deaf people. To be able to understand a limited range of simple words, sentences in BSL. To be able to take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate some of the barriers to communication and how to use fingerspelling
  • Demonstrate basic signing relating to topics ‘family/meeting people’, ‘numbers’ (to include money, age, dates and time)
  • Demonstrate basic signing relating to topics ‘weather’, ‘directions’ and ‘transport’
  • Demonstrate confidence when meeting Deaf people and be equipped to sign in basic everyday situations/conversations using appropriate language conventions relating to BSL structure/culture.L.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of turn taking and two-way conversational skills in BS

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Learners will be asked to complete an ILP and tutor can mark learner progress within this

  • Nothing else is needed

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • At the end of the course the tutor will explain further areas for study such as Deaf Awareness Course and level 1 Award in BSL (both of which are recognised and accredited courses, monitored by the awarding body Signature)
