Aimed primarily at people with a hearing loss. Groups are held in a supportive, caring environment with like minded people. The course helps to supplement their residual hearing by using other skills and strategies, enabling them to get more out of conversations and interaction with others

Course aim

Acquire lip-reading skills,strategies, get more out of conversations in everyday situations. Understand the individual effects of hearing loss find personal strategies to improve communication skills, increase confidence

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Lip read and finger spell more confidently and be able to explain to others how good communication tactics will help them to understand and participate continuing from the previous sessions.
  • Demonstrate the confidence to ask others to modify their speech in helpful ways to enable them to join in with less difficulty than before.
  • Identify and explain about environmental aids and know how and where to obtain these, including any recently released technology.
  • Improve relationships with friends and family with greater understanding and communication.
  • Note – developments will take place within each outcome each term depending on ability level.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
