This course will provide an opportunity for students to improve their math’s skills and develop practical problem solving skills in order to help improve their job prospects and increase confidence for everyday life.

Course aim

To develop maths skills at E3 through a range of practical contexts.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for parents

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use different methods of calculation to add, subtract, multiply and divide sums of money, demonstrating an understanding of place value. Use a calculator to check answers. N1/E3.3,4, 6 MSS1/E3.1
  • Write decimals and percentages as fractions and apply strategies to find fractional and percentage parts of quantities and measurements. Use a calculator to check answers. N2/E.3. 1,2,3,4
  • Convert measurements to the same units to work out the area of a rectangle. (e.g. cm, mm,) MSS1/E3.5,6,4
  • Sort 2-D and 3-D shapes to solve practical problems MSS2/ E3.1
  • Discuss in a group how social data is collected and presented. Identify a topic to research, (e.g. modes of transport or forms of leisure activities) and explore different ways of presenting the same data. HD1/E3.1, 2,3, 4

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
