This course is to support adults with physical disabilities to develop a range of life skills to improve health & well-being through learning new skills, developing existing skills and working towards independent living where possible. Skills include discussion/communication/thinking skills (Media Studies). This course has been put together after consultation with COSC to give a holistic approach to health & wellbeing. We are addressing mental health issues robustly by developing thinking & communications skills as well as promoting relaxation through learning skills that need concentration & boost self-esteem. There will be opportunities to meet up with WEA students from other centres delivering a similar course to work collaboratively where possible. This will help to combat social isolation & form friendships.

Course aim

To improve a range of life skills to improve health & wellbeing & promote independence & inclusion.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for students who attend a specific centre only. For more information please call 0300 303 3464
  • Students attend COSC day centre.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To produce a newspaper & evaluate the process of production & finished results.
  • To identify at least one area of IT that you wish to progress in. Track your progress to your individual goals.
  • To assess your own health in relation to your disability & set 3 personal goals to improve your own health & well-being.
  • To be able to share your opinion on a range of media stories by either joining in class discussion or taking part in class votes (People's Parliament).
  • To join in a range of sports activities and state what physical activities you could do yourself (with or without support). To define 'happiness' and make a personal well-being plan.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
