This course explores the basic skills of using Literacy and Numeracy to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening using a variety of teaching and learning methods.

Course aim

The main aim of this course is to promote the enjoyment and appreciation of practising and improving everyday basic skills using a variety of teaching and learning methods.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate the understanding and reading of texts through reading comprehension
  • Write 2 short paragraphs to compare people's lives in the past as to what they are now.
  • . Demonstrate the understanding of the value of coins when paying for items
  • Read a short story together and complete a gap-filling exercise
  • Watch a clip on a historical invention and give one fact about its practicality in our daily lives

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students would be asked to work in small groups as well as a large group

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Students will have the opportunity to discuss a possible future course, if they so wish and what topics they would like to cover
