To understand the geographical and historical aspects of our local area and acknowledge the ideas, customs and social behaviours of our local community.

Course aim

To acquire knowledge of local history. To improve psychological well-being through interaction and discussion. To stimulate the memory. Recognise local towns and landmarks.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Anyone interested in local history.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name physical and historical aspects of our local area
  • Identify local towns and villages
  • Reflect on past beliefs, values and customs of our society
  • Interact through discussion
  • Recognise local buildings and landmarks

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Demonstration Presentation Question and answer Oral quiz Research through books, newspapers and internet

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Verbal feedback at each session and written feedback throughout the course. Assessment to be made through oral discussion, observation and questions & answers.

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
