Cultural Cookery

This course explores the rich cultural heritage of food from around the world. we will look at dishes from the Mediterranean, India, Turkey and Africa. Students are encouraged to share stories of how they cook dishes at home or how their mothers or grandmothers used to cook. We will use herbs and spices, fruit, vegetables and meat to create mouthwatering snacks, meals and pastries from around the globe. Join in making curry, kapassa, baklava

Course aim

This course aims to show students how diverse and interesting food from other cultures can be. The course involves cookery demonstrations.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Hygiene, health and safety issues.
  • safe use of equipment.
  • Introduction to and making of Mediterranean food.
  • Introduction to and making of Indian food e.g. curry.
  • Introduction to and making of Saudi food e.g. kapssa.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
