Beginner's Sewing

This is a lively and enjoyable course aimed at helping students to learn how to sew by hand and by using a sewing machine. During the course you will be able to choose items to make depending upon your ability and experience. The more experienced students will have the opportunity to make several items. The course is for beginners and aims to help students learn how to use a sewing machine to be able to make items of clothes or other things, such as a simple curtain or cushion. It will equip students to progress to a further course at a higher level or at the same level by exploring the subject in a broader sense.

Course aim

This course aims to help students to make their own clothes. It will use simple patterns which students can complete even if they are beginners.

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the part of a sewing machine.
  • list the health and safety issues when setting up a sewing machine.
  • Demonstrate the correct way to thread a sewing machine.
  • correctly use a sewing machine to sew a straight line.
  • complete at least two finished articles e.g cushion, curtain, dress, top, skirt.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
