Beginners' Spanish

This course is intended for complete beginners of the Spanish language. We will be using a variety of teaching and learning methods during the course. For example, listening activities, role-plays and watching clips on the Spanish language and culture. Come along to this group and experience the learning of the language in a friendly and informal atmosphere. Make new friends with interests similar to your own.

Course aim

This course is for beginners of the Spanish language. It will provide students with the skills to get by in Spanish using basic Spanish vocabulary and role-play.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Introduce myself and others
  • Say numbers 1-50 in Spanish
  • Order a drink and a tapas and ask for the bill
  • Demonstrate the understand of money in Spanish through role-play

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • The BBC book Talk Spanish 1 will be discussed in the first lesson and hopefully students would be asked to get this book to support their learning.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • To discuss an ongoing course in Spanish which would help them to build on the knowledge previously learned on this Beginners' Spanish course. To signpost students to the WEA website to look at further courses which maybe of interest to them.
