Healthy Cookery

A fun practical course which will look at what makes a healthy diet. Each week we will prepare a healthy dish in the group and discuss its merits. There will be opportunities to try dishes from other cuisines and cultures also.

Course aim

This course is for everybody who wants to make healthier food choices and seeks to encourage students to cook tasty meals from scratch.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Love of food essential!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Produce at least 6 healthy recipes and state why healthy
  • Identify at least 3 areas of their diet which can be improved (ie reduce salt and or sugar/fat etc)
  • Take part in group discussion on how to find find bargains and value for money while shopping
  • Share at least 2 recipes with each other from different cultures and cuisines

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Apron and container to take food home in Money for ingredients which will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
