This course will look at the history of Western Art through the genre of portraits, concentrating on painting, and ranging in time from early Renaissance to late 19th Century, including artists such as Durer, Velazquez, Courbet, and van Gogh.

Course aim

This course will aim to introduce students to the history of portraits in Western Art, ranging from early Renaissance to late 19th century, and looking at the context in which the work was made.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the developments in portrait painting from early Renaissance to late 19th century.
  • Learn something about the techniques and methods of the artists involved.
  • Understand something of the historical context in which the art was made.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
