Creative with Words and Illustrations

The course is designed to introduce students to being creative with words by participating in group word themed exercises encouraging the development of creative writing and artistic skills, both verbally and with the written word, promoting confidence and wellbeing. Students will have opportunities to engage creatively with other groups in their locality and work towards participation in an exhibition/performance in a venue in their local community.

Course aim

To facilitate using words in a playful and creative way, finding inspiration from stories and poems linked to the theme of the Great War. Students will aim to create handmade books to record their creative words and illustrations.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Term One 1. To demonstrate research skills in the theme of the Great War. 2. To demonstrate the ability to plan, produce and sample creative ideas for writing ideas. 3. To show understanding of the project theme through open group discussions.
  • Term Two 4. To explore two creative writing styles; rhyme and free verse. 5. To demonstrate knowledge of simple poetry/storytelling skills to create writings individually and as part of a group. 6. To participate in a study visit.
  • Term Three 7. To create images to illustrate the creative writing. 8. To construct handmade books to showcase the creative writing. 9. To be involved in a group exhibition/performance in a community venue.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The WEA tutor will organise at least one study visit to enhance learning in the subject.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
