This course explores the story of the Crusades. What were the reasons behind the conflict and what changes did they bring to medieval Christianity and Islam? How should we evaluate major characters in the story of these conflicts? What do they tell us about the medieval religious mindset

Course aim

To introduce the history of the Crusades and understand the background and impact of these events

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the reasons for the beginning of the Crusades
  • Assess the reasons for the initial success of the Christians
  • Assess the reasons for the ultimate victory of the Muslim forces
  • Assess the significance some of the leading figures of the time
  • Analyse the lasting impact of the Crusades

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
