Modern Foreign Languages-French Conversation, Language and Culture

This class is for competent speakers who wish to discuss various topics of current interest for example newspaper articles, their surroundings, leisure activities, French culture etc. We shall expand on your listening skills through different activities and revise grammar.

Course aim

To improve the students’ confidence in speaking and understanding French but also to develop the student’s knowledge and interest in the French culture and way of life.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Learners must have completed an intermediate course and have a fair knowledge in French and French grammar.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Carry out research into the health benefits of being bi- lingual and contribute to a classroom discussion on the subject.
  • Discuss an idea suggested by a visual stimulus.
  • Listen effectively to identify information.
  • Develop an understanding of French culture and be able to relate to your own.
  • Present and voice your own opinion on a range of current topics.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • a French novel (to be discussed in the first lesson)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • any reading, listening etc. in French is advised to maintain a certain level.
