The course will examine two novels: Elizabeth Gaskell's 'North and South' and Charles Dickens' 'Hard Times'. We will consider the impact of the Industrial Revolution on the North, how this is portrayed in the texts, and with supporting material from Engels' 'The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844'

Course aim

This course aims to provide students with an introduction to the Victorian novel, with specific emphasis on how it explores the Industrial Revolution

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the impact of the novels on the English reader
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how the authors use theme and imagery to create meaning
  • Identify the political conditions that form such working environments
  • Critically discuss the texts

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • copy of the two texts [any edition] selections from Engels work will be supplied by the tutor

  • Pre-reading of the two texts is valuable but not obligatory
