How would you define art? This course will provide you with the opportunity to be part of lively and friendly discussions about art, as well as visiting art galleries and artists studios. It will introduce artistic styles, specific artistic movements, pivotal paintings and artists. It will explore visual art forms and their cultural connections. You will gain sufficient knowledge to enable you to write an art critique using principles and elements of art vocabulary.

Course aim

This course will give the opportunity to explore how artists express and interpret our world.Develop ability to discuss artworks as well as extend understanding of the concept of visual art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss some of the key works of Western art and their specific social-historical contexts.
  • Demonstrate enhanced visual literacy and critical thinking skills.
  • Recognise the work of 3 artists and their importance in history.
  • Interpret works of art using visual language on elements and principles, explaining the processes involved in artistic production.
  • Examine and discuss how art operates as a vehicle for human expression.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • We will be visiting an Art Gallery in Liverpool

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
