Calligraphy for Beginners and Improvers

Writing Calligraphy is a skill within most of us.We can learn it in easy stages with one to one tuition.Improve your writing skills such as holding a pen correctly,or learning the flow & rhythms of writing.Have a go at some creative work using colour-e.g.your own Christmas cards. Improvers work on their own projects,whilst others may want to do pen & ink Illustration with or without colour.

Course aim

.Calligraphy-the art of beautiful writing is within reach of most people & can be learnt in fewer than 8 weeks,producing .Create your own Christmas cards using colour & pen decoration & illustration.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Write to a reasonable standard in the Foundational Hand &ROMAN pen capitals.
  • Use a square-edged nib with confidence ,skill & dexterity
  • Develop skills with spacing &layout
  • Create a personal project such as a book - mark or Greeting card etc.
  • Work in colour,-backgrounds,decoration,illustration,written work,including headings.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Some home work to encourage progression.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Pen-holders & nibs will be available to purchase from the tutor.Bring Rulers,assorted pencils,rubber,a cartridge pad that can take ink;& a bottle of non-waterproof ink e,g.Quink or any good calligraphic ink.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • We have a good collection of books available for reference in our resource cupboard also drawing-boards for classroom use.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become a member of the North West Calligraphers Association that holds monthly workshops in Port-Sunlight &Knutsford,(details from the Tutor)
