Pattern Making

Pattern making is a course where learners are able to learn step by step how to take body measurements and are able to measure and cut pattern using brown paper, then label the pattern with correct body measurements. With the pattern it will make it easy for the learners to cut the material and sew their garment. The tutor will also guide the learner step by step explaining how to lay and cut the material using the labelled pattern and then sew the garment

Course aim

learners are able to learn how to take body measurement accurately using tape measure, learning measurements in CM and Inches to label the pattern. The tutor guides the learner how to use pattern to lay and cut the material chosen by the learner.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • This course is suitable for beginners and new learners who do not even know the basic principles of measurement and cutting the pattern.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and demonstrate health and safety requirements when undertaking an activity
  • Practice taking body measurement
  • Identify and demonstrate the importance of planning for an activity
  • Practice cutting and labelling the pattern step by step.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Initial assessment- This is carried out at the start of the course through practical by asking the learners to thread and setup the sewing machine properly with the tutor observing and asking the learner to do body measurement using measure tape.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Material, Scissors, Needle, Brown paper, Pen, Pencil, Measure tape, Paper, Thread, Ruler, Pins, Talylor chalk.
