The Vikings

The Viking Age lasted from 800-1100 and in that time these intrepid mariners sailed to Constantinople, Normandy and the Mediterranean as well as Iceland, Greenland and America. This course examines the society and beliefs of the Vikings and examines the explorations and legacy of these Norse adventurers.

Course aim

To introduce the society and beliefs of the Vikings and provide an account of their explorations in the period 800-1100

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Identify up to 4 distinctive features of Viking Society
  • 2. Distinguish between the various gods and goddesses of the Viking pantheon
  • 3.Read and critically reflect upon a selection of Viking Age texts in translation

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
