This course will enable the learner to learn basic art techniques and to combine this with modelling figurative forms to express issues in today's society

Course aim

Students will learn basic art techniques, pencil,charcoal ,paint and experiment with modelling materials to create interesting figurative artwork which expresses issues

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No prior experience necessary but enthusiasm and interest a must!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate correct use of media, use of modroc,papier mache
  • Create 2 designs or models to express 2 sides of an issue
  • Complete 2 figurative drawings
  • Select artwork(from a gallery or book) which reflects societal issues and discussed with the group
  • Demonstrate improved confidence and wellbeing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Homework given to aid course understanding

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Homework discussed with the group at the beginning of each lesson. Coursework evaluated at the end of each lesson and at the end of the course.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • A sketchbook and pencil. Monies for a trip to the art gallery

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Students may want to research artists who have used the figure to express issues in their work

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Students may want to continue their learning with the wea or apply for further courses at Stockport or Manchester colleges
