This course will enable the learner to learn basic art techniques and combine this with the use of reed pens,ink and watercolour wash to create interesting and exciting artworks which reflects issues in today's society

Course aim

Students will learn basic art techniques and experiment further with the use of line and wash (ink,pencil with watercolour or ink wash) to create interesting and exciting artwork

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No experience necessary but interest and enthusiasm a must!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Complete a self portrait in ink and wash
  • Complete 3 landscape drawings in ink and wash
  • Complete 2 artworks which express 2 sides of an issue
  • Select artwork (from gallery or book) which reflects societal issues and discussed with the group
  • Demonstrate improved confidence and wellbeing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Homework given to aid course understanding

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Homework discussed at the beginning of the lesson. Coursework evaluated with the group at the end of each lesson and at the end of the course

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • A sketchbook and pencil. Evidence of prior sketching/art ideas. Monies for a trip to the art gallery

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Students may want to research artists who have drawn with ink and wash. Henry Moore, Frank Auerbach

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Students may want to apply for further courses with the WEA or apply for foundation courses at Manchester and Stockport colleges
