This course is designed to prepare individuals to accomplish specific learning outcomes relating to 'life in the UK', helping them to complete the test that will grant them the ability to become British Citizens.

Course aim

To give learners the knowledge and confidence to take the ‘life in the UK’ test.

Who is the course for?

- No skills or experience needed - This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

What topics will this course cover

- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning - You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Understand Health and Safety issues whilst using the ADAB centre and its facilities 2. Find and use printed and web-based resources to increase knowledge of the subject 3. Understand the culture and history of the UK pertinent to the test 4. Confidently use the IT equipment and online practise tests (www.lifeintheuk.net) 5. Understand what is required to pass the test 6. Understand the costs and requirements of attaining British citizenship

How will I know I'm making progress?

- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion - You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

- Nothing else is needed - All materials will be provided

Reading and information sources

- No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What could the course lead to?

- Progress to another WEA course - Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member - Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation - Access the WEA What Next? booklet here http://www.wea.org.uk/learn-wea/what-can-i-do-next - Complete a formal test at a given test centre.

You can enrol online if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
  • are paying with a credit/debit card or are not paying a fee because of a qualifying benefit
  • have a valid email address
  • have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
  • are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2017
  • have read and accept the standard terms and conditions
