The course covers the 400 year period from when the Romans officially left Britain, the conversion of the English and the arrival of the first Viking raiders. It includes the impact on the Romano British peoples in the west, Bede's account of the Anglo-Saxons, and the latest archaeological finds Each of the 10 sessions will cover a span of 40 years from 400-800

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the history of the Anglo-Saxon period from AD400-800 including the literary narrative told by the Venerable Bede and modern archaeological discoveries

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Identify the reasons for the demise of Post Roman Britain
  • 2. Argue in class the nature and extent of the Anglo-Saxon invasions
  • 3. Identify the reasons why Anglo Saxon kings chose to convert to Christianity
  • 4. Examine in groups at least one piece from the writings of the Venerable Bede
  • 5. Identify some of the distinctive features of Anglo Saxon art

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
