A creative writing course that will explore both the practice and process of writing. This will involve the use of a range of exercises and reading materials. The following topics will be explored: How to generate ideas. Writing exercises. Poetry and prose by published authors. Using memory and life stories. Character creation. How to devise a plot. Drafting and editing. Writing poetry, prose and dramatic monologues. Further topics will take into consideration suggestions from the students.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to develop creative writing skills and enable students to gain confidence and develop a positive, creative relationship with the group.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • An interest in the subject is required. The course is suitable for new and continuing students to explore and develop their creative writing skills.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Read, discuss and reflect on a range of poetry and other texts by published writers.
  • 2. Participate in group discussions and writing activities employing the strategies studied.
  • 3. Identify and evaluate the use of a range of writing techniques and devices.
  • 4. Produce the final draft of a poem or piece of prose.
  • 5. Maintain a writer’s journal to reflect the creative process.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A notebook or paper and something to write with.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre-course reading is required. Further reading will be provided by the tutor each week.

What can I do next?

  • This course will hopefully encourage participants to do more writing and will provide a basis for studying on other creative writing courses within the WEA or other Adult Education organisations.
