This course will enable the learner to learn basic art techniques and to experiment with tonal mediums, charcoal,graphite, chalk and emulsion paint to create exciting artwork which expresses issues in today's society

Course aim

Students will learn basic art techniques and combine this with learning how to use tone effectively to render solid forms

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students may have prior knowledge or experience but this is not essential

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Complete a tonal drawing to express 1 side of an issue
  • Complete a tonal painting to express the other side of the issue
  • Complete a self portrait in tone
  • Select artwork from a gallery of book which reflects societal issues and discussed with the group
  • Display improved confidence and wellbeing

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Homework given to aid understanding of course subjects

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Homework discussed with the group at the beginning of each class. Work completed in class discussed and evaluated at the end of each lesson

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • A sketchbook and pencil. Students may want to bring monies for a trip to the art gallery

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Students may want to research artists that expressed issues in their work

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Students may want to apply for further art courses or a foundation course at Manchester and Stockport colleges
