Come and join our Soft Furnishings course. Learn how to make those cushions and curtains to add that little added touch to your home and learn techniques in the craft of upholstery and soft furnishings. Take your skills home and revamp your household items. Those with some skills will learn how to develop and master your skills further. If appropriate, you will be able to identify your own specific learning outcome if not already listed in the course outcomes.

Course aim

To provide experience of soft furnishing with a view to design window dressing, cushions etc and apply the skills to your own home

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify and use the practical techniques for sewing an item of soft furnishing
  • identify the materials required for sewing an item of soft furnishing
  • identify the tools and equipment required for making soft furnishings
  • plan and execute an item of soft furnishings
  • identify and demonstrate health and safety required when undertaking a sewing activity

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
