For nearly 400 years most of Britain were under Roman rule. How did the Romans conquer and hold on to these far flung lands? What was life like and why did they find it necessary to build Hadrian's Wall in the second century? What brought about the demise of Roman Britain by the beginning of the fifth century?

Course aim

The aim is to provide an overview of Roman Britain from the conquest in AD43 to the end of Roman occupation in AD 410

- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

1. Identify the political and economic reasons for the Roman invasion in AD43 2. Argue in class the pros and cons of the Roman presence in Britain 3. Identify major features of Roman architecture and design in town and country 4. Provide four reasons for the decline and fall of Roman Britain

How will I know I'm making progress?

- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion - You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

- Nothing else is needed - All materials will be provided

- No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
