'The Play's the Thing'

Three plays on a common theme are given a group reading. Context on the author and other relevant aspects is given.Plays are analysed and discussed in terms of genre and social influences. Character interpretation plays a crucial role and some techniques on vocal performance are introduced. A small charge towards library texts will be collected.

Course aim

The course encourages a developing interest in drama, in terms of literature, social context and performance. Sessions aim to provide on-going research into historical context or performance techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • An ability to read aloud from a play text is a requisite to full enjoyment of the course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • to apply an informed approach to play-reading
  • to confidently employ enhanced insight and vocal technique when interpreting a role.
  • to identify genre and dramatic terminology.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Any voluntary individual research will be encouraged,though not set. A short initial vocal warm-up may be occasionally introduced in a light-hearted manner.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Above mentioned file will contain tutor hand-outs and copies of any voluntary submissions.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Theatre visits may be an advantage in terms of approach to readings.
