This course will enable the learner to learn basic art techniques and to combine this with experimentation of modelling materials , clay ,modroc, and colour to create exciting colourful structures which express issues in today's society

Course aim

Students will learn basic art techniques and experiment with modelling materials and colour to create exciting colourful sculptures

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Enthusiasm and prior knowledge would be helpful but not essential

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Complete 2 designs/sketches for model making to express 2 sides of an issue
  • Complete 2 models/sculptures to express 2 sides of an issue
  • Select artwork (from gallery or book) which reflects societal issues and discuss with group
  • Complete a tonal drawing of a local landmark
  • Demonstrate improved confidence and well being

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Homework given at the end of each class to aid understanding

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Homework discussed at the start of lesson and work completed in class evaluated at the end of each lesson by tutor and other members of class. Mid and end of term review.

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • A sketchbook and pencil. Monies for a trip to the art gallery

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Students may want to research sculptors or 3D model makers who have expressed issues in their work

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Students may want to apply for a Foundation course at Stockport college or Manchester university
