This fun, practical course will provide the opportunity for participants to gain an insight into the skills involved in planning, delivering and evaluating teaching and training sessions for adults. It will also explore the requirements to become a teacher/trainer of adults.

Course aim

Provide an opportunity for participants to gain an insight into the skills/knowledge involved in teaching adults. Explore the requirements to become a teacher/trainer of adults.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify difficulties and challenges of teaching adults
  • List three main learning styles and choose appropriate teaching methods for each learning style
  • Give brief descriptions of: schemes of work, session plan, SMART learning outcomes, assessment methods and resources
  • Write a short lesson plan and deliver a 15 minute micro-teach to the group
  • Reflect on own teaching and give feedback to other students

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
