This course will look at how to be more organised and manage time effectively. Skim reading and note taking skills will develop the ability to recognise importance of context and to think critically when evaluating fact and opinion. Researching effectively and working collaboratively to discuss findings with techniques that improve knowledge retention.

Course aim

This course will develop and strengthen study skills required to become a more confident and successful student.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Manage my study time more effectively.
  • Organise my study material in a way that suits my learning style.
  • Skim read, thinking critically about the context and know how to take meaning notes
  • Research and work collaboratively with others

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

You can if you meet all of the following requirements:

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
