Introduction to Childcare

This course will provide an opportunity to explore how children grow, develop, learn to communicate and explore various factors which affect the growth and development. It will explore the role of play in a child's development and the importance of planning for activities in childcare settings.

Course aim

This course will help equip you with skills and knowledge needed to start considering a career in Childcare. It will provide an opportunity to explore how children grow, develop and learn to communicate and the role you can play in supporting them

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • No formals qualifications are necessary but you will need a reasonable level of spoken English and Literacy. Course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • list at least two examples of children's physical development for different age group
  • list at least two examples of social and emotional development for different age group
  • match language development milestones to age
  • identify how diet and exercise may affect growth and development 5) give at least two examples of play
  • give at least two examples of play activities to help physical, intellectual, language, emotional & social development

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring an A4 notepad and pen for taking class notes
