'History for LDD 1910-1920'

The course will look at the events and people that shaped the years 1910 to 1920. As 2018 marks 100 years since the end of World War I, we will place particular emphasis on this subject. Other subjects covered will include the Suffragette movement and the changing role of women in politics, the reign of George V (1910 - 1936), and how we lived during these years e.g. what living conditions were like, what we were eating, fashion of the time, music , literature and art. The course will involve several trips out to places of local interest.

Course aim

The course will cover the years 1910 to 1920 in Britain and around the world. The course will place emphasis on World War I and we will also look at the local history of Portsmouth during these years.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • The course is for people who have a learning difficulty or disability, especially shy or socially isolated people.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a knowledge of World War I, why it started, specific events during the war and how it ended in 1918.
  • Know about the Suffragette movement and how it changed the lives of women.
  • Gain a knowledge of other events that took place such as the Titanic sinking and the flu epidemic of 1918-1919 which claimed the lives of 200,000 in Britain alone.
  • Know about how we lived at the time including living conditions, what we ate, the fashion of the time, music, art and literature.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Students have a timeline that they will add pictures to during the course.

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
