Suitable for men and women wanting to learn at S/L beginner level all types of plant care and propagation while having opportunities to work with a range of tools on garden maintenance projects suitable to the individual's ability. Learning with support to become a good all round gardener.

Course aim

Aiming to promote health and well-being for supported learning students through friendships and gardening, plant knowledge and horticulture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • Stamina may be needed to undertake the 4 hour session. Rest is encouraged during the session if required.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Take cuttings and create new plants by division.
  • Monitor plant growth through watering, disease and insect watch.
  • Identify a small range of summer bedding plants used in our summer containers.
  • Undertake simple and appropriate garden maintenance tasks.
  • Use a variety of garden tools, returning them clean after the task.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Occasional informal practical tests when appropriate and ready.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Take part in monitoring weather patterns and record verbally tasks achieved in the group diary.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • Suitable and appropriate gardening clothing. PPE well fitting gardening gloves and a packed lunch for student and support staff.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Start a home garden.
