Suitable for men and women wanting to learn at S/L beginner level all types of plant care and propagation while having opportunities to work with a range of tools on garden maintenance projects suitable to the individual's ability. Learning with support to become a good all round gardener.

Course aim

Aiming to promote health and well-being for supported learning students through friendships and gardening, plant knowledge and horticulture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students with limited mobility or requiring a slower pace of learning may consider this group. Contact the tutor via enrolment for more information if necessary.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Take cuttings and create plants by the division method.
  • Monitor plant growth and health by watering and watching for insect and disease problems.
  • Identify a small range of summer plants used in our containers.
  • Undertake a range of suitable/appropriate garden maintenance tasks and projects.
  • Use a variety of garden tools, returning them clean when finished.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • The tutor may arrange appropriate and informal practical tests when gardeners are ready.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • Gardeners will be encouraged to verbally (with support) take part part in recording their achievements each session in the group diary.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • Suitable and appropriate clothing for gardening outside. PPE Well fitting gardening gloves. FOR SUPPORT STAFF AND GARDENERS
