Suitable for men and women wanting to learn at S/L beginner level all types of plant care and propagation while having opportunities to work with a range of tools on garden maintenance projects suitable to the individual's ability. Learning with support to become a good all round gardener

Course aim

Aiming to promote health and well-being for supported learning students through friendships and gardening, plant Knowledge and horticulture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Create new plants by taking cuttings and by division
  • Monitor their growth and care by regular watering and insect/disease watch
  • Identify a range of summer plants used in the seasonal planters
  • Undertake a variety of garden maintenance projects suitable to the individuals ability.
  • Use a variety of garden tools, returning them clean after use.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • occasional informal tests when the individual is ready.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • informal tests regarding identification of familiar plants/trees when appropriate and the gardener is ready.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • Suitable and appropriate clothing for working outside in all weathers. PPE regarding well fitting gardening gloves for gardeners AND their support staff.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Consider setting up a home garden where you live. Tutor is happy to support with any home projects.
