Coping with your everyday life requires you to engage in social interactions making use of your English language skills. Improving your English and becoming more aware of the language needed in social and practical situations will help you settle more happily in your immediate surroundings. This course is aimed at helping you become a more responsible, efficient and resourceful person. We will also learn about social norms in the UK.

Course aim

Improve your ESOL skills to be able to face and cope with different everyday situations, both, personal and social e.g. doctor's appointments or school interaction.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Entry level is recommended to benefit from the course topics.To be able to read and write English is also desirable to understand handouts and complete exercises.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Take part in a conversation for 1-2 minutes to arrange a meeting e.g. arrange for your child to have a friend over to play.
  • Read three instructions on a medicine label.
  • Identify, discuss and write about at least two social norms in the UK.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
