Safeguarding is Everybody’s Business.This workshop for volunteers at Age UK Merstham will raise attendees' awareness of abuse and neglect of 'adults at risk' and will clarify the roles and responsibilities they have as volunteers to prevent and respond to Safeguarding concerns within the Surrey area. The workshop will look at the key responsibilities from the Care Act 2014 (rev 2016); what 'an adult at risk' is; identifying types and indicators of abuse and neglect and how to raise safeguarding concerns.

Course aim

This workshop for volunteers at Age UK Merstham will raise awareness of abuse and neglect of adults at risk and the roles they have as volunteers to prevent and respond to Safeguarding concerns.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • Merstham Age UK volunteers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain who might be 'an adult at risk'.
  • Name 10 types of abuse and neglect.
  • Identify several indicators of abuse and neglect.
  • Understand how to raise a safeguarding concern to the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub in Surrey.
  • Know where to find more information.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
