Introduction to Childcare

This course will provide an opportunity to explore how children grow, develop, learn to communicate and explore various factors which affect their growth and development. It will explore the role of play in a child's development and the importance of planning for activities in childcare settings.

Course aim

This course will help equip you with skills and knowledge needed to start considering a career in Childcare. It will provide an opportunity to explore how children grow, develop and learn to communicate and the role you can play in supporting them.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Anyone considering a career in a Childcare setting. No formal qualifications are necessary but you will need a reasonable level of spoken English and Literacy

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List at least two examples of children's physical development for different age groups
  • List at least two examples of social and emotional development for different age groups
  • Match language development milestones to age
  • Identify how diet and exercise may affect growth and development
  • Give at least two examples of play activities to help physical, intellectual, language, emotional & social development

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • Verbal and formative feedback, based on Tutor observation, students, discussions, written notes and self/peer assessment

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You will need to bring with you a small A4 file, pen and paper for note-taking. Occasionally, tutors may ask students to contribute craft materials or other small items to support a particular activity/session.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • It is hoped that students will gain confidence and take new knowledge, skills and understanding into a childcare setting and/ or progress to an accredited level 1 & 2 in Childcare
