First Steps In ESOL

This course is a non accredited course and is aimed at Pre Entry students. Students will practice speaking and listening, reading and writing using various topics e.g. shopping, getting to know one another, reading a letter etc. Students will be taught common phrases to ask questions, write simple words and sentences and how to read using phonics and sight vocabulary.

Course aim

This course is aimed at students who have little or no skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing English.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Greet and introduce yourself to another person
  • Ask and answer at least 2 simple questions
  • Read at least 4 common everyday words
  • Write your name and/or address using capital letters for all proper nouns and postcode.
  • Write/say at least two simple sentences

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits
