Reading is part of our everyday life. Helping your children to embark on their reading journey and enjoy it, is crucial for later life. Reading is a neverending source of information in all subjects your children will tackle at school, and together with reading for pleasure, will help them to become responsible, efficient and resourceful adults. We will also learn about basic punctuation in texts as well as exploring the possibilities of illustrations in books. Furthermore, we will look at how to motivate reluctant readers.

Course aim

To understand the role of parents in their child`s reading journey with the aim to encourage them and help them along the way.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • E1 at least is desirable and recommended to grasp and/or understand the course topics.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss and understand 2 top tips about the role of parents in encouraging their child to read.
  • Recognise, read and incorporate punctuation when reading a short text/book e.g. exclamation mark.
  • Recognise that illustrations in books are a useful part of developing the child’s reading.
  • Two ways to develop reluctant readers and encourage them to read e.g. boys.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
