Seated Exercise for Body and Mind

This course is suitable for those with limited mobility including those who use a wheelchair. It will enable participants to perform gentle exercises from head to toe under guidance from the tutor. Exercises will be repeated and props introduced for fun and variety and will help to increase stamina. Participants will also play games and quizzes in groups to aid memory recall and keep their minds active.

Course aim

This course will help those with limited mobility perform simple exercises under guided instruction in a safe environment. It will also help with memory via group exercises.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Perform at least three exercises using the upper body
  • Undertake at least three exercises using the lower body
  • Participate in at least two exercises using a prop
  • Appreciate the benefits of chair based exercise
  • Engage in at least three games or quizzes to help with memory recall

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Please wear loose clothing. You may also want to bring a small bottle of water to keep with you, although water will be provided in a central area.
