Makaton: Beginners Workshop for Parents and Carers

The Makaton Beginners Workshop Learn signs and symbols from the Core Vocabulary stages 1 - 4 plus Additional Vocabulary. Sessions include: The origins of Makaton, Makaton’s place in the signing world, discussing commonly asked questions, hints and tips for effective signing and symbol use and how to start using Makaton in everyday situations at home or work.

Course aim

The course is delivered with lots of time for practice and building confidence to use Makaton, you will learn over 200 signs and symbols and how to use Makaton at home or at work.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • The Makaton Beginners Workshop is for parents, carers and workers who need to use Makaton in everyday situations.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have the confidence and skills to begin to use Makaton more fluently in daily interactions with children and adults.
  • Achieve a certificate of attendance on completion of the workshop, giving access to further courses.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of using Makaton in a practical manner.
  • know of further Makaton training available.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will have opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of using Makaton in a practical manner as well as discuss lecture information in small groups

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Feedback will be given to the group as a whole, in small groups and individually throughout the course.

What else do I need to know?

  • A course booklet containing a wealth of information about Makaton, including the signs and symbols that you will learn on the workshop, is provided. Students will need to purchase this at a cost of £32.
