Supported Learning Gardening and Horticulture

Suitable for men and women wanting to learn at S/L beginners level plant care and propagation whilst enjoying opportunities to work with a range of tools on garden maintenance tasks suitable for each individuals ability, learning with support to become a good all round gardener with other like minded people. The longer 4 hour courses could be used to enable gardeners to increase their stamina and fitness in preparation for volunteer work or future employment in the industry.

Additional information about this course

This course is run by the WEA, working in partnership with East Surrey College delivering Adult Learning across the East Surrey area. This is a fee paying course. If you are in receipt of an income related benefit you may be entitled to free tuition.

Course aim

In order to promote health and well being students will take every opportunity to work outside and connect with the natural world through gardening and horticulture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • If gardener/students are attending unsupported they must be able to follow simple instruction and occasionally be prepared to work alone or in a small group unaided.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Plant and recognise a variety of spring bulbs.
  • Monitor their growth and care.
  • Identify a small range of houseplants and the countries of origin which determines their care regime.
  • Take part in a number of seasonal garden maintenance programmes.
  • Use a variety of garden tools safely, cleaning and putting away after use.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Student gardeners will be expected to verbally or by other means take part in recording their sessions work and progress in the end of session diary.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Gardeners should be prepared to verbally record their daily tasks in the group diary at the end of session.

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • So gardeners and their support staff can take part in all aspects of the course, they are expected to wear suitable outdoor shoes and clothing for all weathers. FOR HYGIENE REASONS PERSONAL GARDENING GLOVES ARE ESSENTIAL. A PACKED LUNCH.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Internet access for some students may be beneficial. Gardeners are expected to use the magazines and books available on site Gardeners are encouraged to watch related gardening or nature programmes on TV.
