Suitable for men and women wanting to learn at S/L beginners level plant care and propagation whilst enjoying opportunities to work with a range of tools on garden maintenance tasks suitable for each individuals ability, learning with support to become a good all round gardener with other like minded people.

Additional information about this course

This course is run by the WEA, working in partnership with East Surrey College delivering Adult Learning across the East Surrey area. This is a fee paying course. If you are in receipt of an income related benefit you may be entitled to free tuition.

Course aim

In order to promote health and well being students will take every opportunity to work outside and connect with the natural world through gardening and horticulture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Classes are for supported learning students, support may be provided by family or residential home staff.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Plant a variety of bulbs for spring displays.
  • Monitor their growth, care and development
  • Identify a range of house plants and their country of origin.
  • Take part in a number of seasonal garden maintenance tasks.
  • Use a variety of tools and equipment safely, cleaning and putting away after use.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • Support staff will be encouraged to learn alongside their client and take part fully to continue the learning process outside the session.

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • In order the gardeners and their support staff can take part in all aspects of the course, they are expected to wear suitable outdoor shoes and clothing for all weathers. FOR HYGIENE REASONS PERSONAL GARDENING GLOVES ARE ESSENTIAL

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
